As the web grows beyond centralized servers into federated and blockchain-backed systems, the simple notion of a URL is no longer enough. NthLink emerges as a conceptual approach to linking that treats connections as first-class, queryable artifacts in a global graph. Rather than merely pointing from one resource to another, an nthlink captures the relationship, context, and provenance of that connection — and it can be resolved across different networks and degrees of separation. At its core, an nthlink represents a directed (or undirected) edge in a distributed graph. Each edge carries a small, verifiable metadata payload: type (e.g., cites, mirrors, derives-from), timestamp, trust assertions (signatures or attestations), and optional routing hints. Because resources may live on different protocols (HTTP, IPFS, blockchain addresses, databases), nthlink uses content-addressing and canonical identifiers to enable resolution independent of transport. A discovery service or a DHT-like index can respond to queries such as “give me all nthlinks of type ‘cites’ within two hops of this document,” enabling powerful multi-hop search and provenance tracing. Why “nth”? The name highlights n-hop queries and composite relationships: users and applications often need to reason about not only a direct link but about chains of influence, derived works, or supply-chain steps. Applications are wide-ranging. Researchers can reconstruct citation networks with verifiable attestations. Supply-chain systems can trace product provenance across multiple parties by following authenticated nthlinks. Social platforms might use nthlink-based graphs to enforce trust propagation models or to surface communities at various degrees of separation. Knowledge graphs and semantic web projects can adopt nthlink semantics to carry richer relation data while staying interoperable with existing RDF and JSON-LD standards. The benefits of an nthlink approach include improved provenance, better interoperability across heterogeneous storages, and more expressive queries over relationships. Privacy and trust are also considered: metadata can be encrypted or revealed only under conditions, and attestations allow consumers to assess the credibility of paths. Integrations with zero-knowledge proofs and selective disclosure protocols can further reduce leakage while proving the existence or validity of a chain. Challenges remain: defining interoperable standards, managing scale and latency of multi-hop queries, and establishing governance for attestation authorities. Nonetheless, as the web continues to decentralize and the need for transparent, traversable relationships grows, nthlink offers a succinct, extensible model for connecting resources in ways that are verifiable, queryable, and meaningful across systems.
